In most laser optics, laser lenses tend to absorb specific laser wavelengths due to manufacturing processes or external contamination. Over time, this absorption reduces the lifespan of laser lenses and can lead to damage, ultimately affecting performance—or even causing complete failure. Such issues are not uncommon. As laser lens absorption of a particular wavelength increases, uneven heating occurs, causing the lens to reflect light and altering its refractive index. When laser light passes through or is reflected by a high-absorption laser lens, the resulting non-uniform distribution of laser power causes the center of the lens to heat up more than its edges. This phenomenon is known in optics as the “lens effect.”

When cleaning laser optics, the sole objective is to remove contaminants from the lens surface—without causing additional contamination or damaging the lens.
