When laser welding different materials, the position of the laser beam plays a crucial role in determining weld quality—this is especially true for butt joints compared to lap joints. For example, when hardening steel gears are welded onto low-carbon steel barrels, precisely controlling the laser beam’s position helps produce a weld that is primarily composed of low-carbon constituents and exhibits excellent crack resistance. In certain applications involving laser equipment retrofitting or upgrades, the geometry of the workpiece to be welded may require a specific angle of laser beam deflection. As long as the deflection angle between the beam axis and the joint surface remains within 100 degrees, the workpiece’s absorption of laser energy will not be adversely affected.
