For laser cutting machines, as usage time increases, it becomes necessary to regularly replace certain components to ensure stable performance. These components are known as wear parts, with nozzles and lenses being the most frequently replaced parts in laser cutting machines.

 

Among them, the focusing lens is a relatively precise optical component, and its cleanliness directly affects the processing performance and quality of the laser cutting machine. Therefore, regular maintenance of the focusing lens is absolutely essential. Today, we’re going to share with you the maintenance procedures and key considerations for focusing lenses—let’s take a look below!

 

 

The Correct Operating Procedure for Maintaining the Focusing Lens of a Laser Cutting Machine:

 

1. Remove the focusing lens from the frame: Loosen the set screws, then carefully remove the air nozzle and the lens barrel one by one; first use a blower to gently blow away any dust on the lens surface.

 

2. If it is truly necessary to clean the lens, only laboratory‑grade soft paper cotton balls should be used. Dip a suitable amount of acetone or high‑concentration alcohol onto the cotton ball, and gently wipe from the center of the lens outward in a clockwise direction. If needed, both sides of the lens must be cleaned; be careful and meticulous when wiping.

 

3. Install the lens barrel and air nozzle, adjust the focal length, and tighten the securing screws. When installing the focusing lens, be sure to keep the convex side facing downward.

 

When maintaining the focusing lens of a laser cutting machine, pay attention to the following three points:

 

1. The focusing lens is made of ZnSe (zinc selenide), which is relatively brittle and susceptible to damage from drops; therefore, when disassembling or reassembling the lens, be sure to: avoid applying excessive force and prevent any collisions with hard objects. The lens surface is coated with an anti‑reflective film and is sensitive to contamination, moisture, oil, and scratches; thus, it is essential to provide dry, degreased air during operation. Never handle laser cutting machine focusing lenses directly with your bare hands, as skin oils can cause permanent damage to the lens surface. Instead, wear gloves and use dedicated protective gear for handling. For smaller lenses, it’s more convenient to use optical tweezers or vacuum tweezers. Regardless of the method used to grip the laser cutting machine focusing lens, always clamp it along non‑optical surfaces—for example, the frosted edges around the lens perimeter.

 

2. In general, it is necessary to inspect the focusing lens of the laser cutting machine both before use and before and after cleaning. Since most contaminants and surface defects are relatively small in size, we often need to use magnifying devices when inspecting the lens. In addition to magnifying equipment, we sometimes also need to shine a relatively bright beam of light onto the optical surface to enhance the specular reflectivity of surface contaminants and defects, making it easier to identify them.

 

3. When cleaning a laser cutting machine’s focusing lens, always use clean wiping paper and optical‑grade solvents to prevent damage from other contaminants. The wiping paper must be moistened with the appropriate solvent; never use it dry. For reasons of softness and gentleness, suitable options include pure cotton Webril wipes, cotton balls, lens paper, and cotton swabs as applicators.

 

Although cleaning and maintaining the focusing lens of a laser cutting machine can be a hassle, proper cleaning and maintenance practices can extend the lens’s service life. For businesses, this not only boosts efficiency but also helps reduce costs—truly achieving twice the result with half the effort. If, after multiple cleanings, the desired level of cleanliness still cannot be attained, it’s important to consider replacing the lens to ensure the laser cutting machine’s processing efficiency and avoid disrupting production.
